Wimpy Kid Greg Heffley (Zachary Gordon) charts his memorable summer in his diary.

I was at an event the other day and I saw a boy sitting in front of me reading the book “Diary of a Wimpy Kid.”  My son also read these books and I’ve seen the movie. I get it, it’s about the journey of a middle schooler and the trials and tribulations he faces at school and home.  The books are filled with funny stories and illustrations and your pre-teen will enjoy them!

But why does the main character, Greg Heffley, have to be a weakling?  What if the title was Diary of a Behemoth?  Or Diary of a Brute?  Or Diary of a Creative Kid?  I know, the book is meant to be a satirical fiction, but stay with me here. There are some examples of Greg being very creative and brave to solve his problems.  Sometimes he was dishonest but creative nonetheless.

I applaud Greg for the creativity and bravery that he occasionally musters up.  But I’m not on-board with him being a wimp.  We can relate to Greg in regards to negative self talk.  Negative thoughts can inhibit us from being bold and courageous.  It can derail our hopes and dreams.  It can keep us from being awesome (Thanks @jonacuff)!  Sign up for your first race, write the first chapter, try something new in your classroom, pursue that business venture, or start that diet.  Jump in, work hard, learn, persist, and remind yourself that you are awesome.  I think if Greg renamed his diary, he would be on his way to behemoth status.
